My school had a small 6th grade class of only 4 students. When we ran out of chapters in the textbook, instead of doing a boring review class I decided to come up with a brand new type of lesson for them. I taught a series of 10 classes based on the popular tabletop game, Dungeons & Dragons. Each lesson focused on reviewing a couple topics covered in their textbooks.
Since this game was being played by 6th graders that aren't native English speakers, it was essential to present the rules in a way that they could understand. I tried to keep it as simple as possible. Most decisions that they made when creating their characters were purely cosmetic.
The only gameplay element I included was skills. Each student had to choose 3 things that their character was good at and 3 things they were bad at. If they were good at it, then they received a +1 to a skill check roll, and if they were bad at it, then they received a -1.
Armed with nothing but a map and a shopping list, the students were set loose into Green Town. This segment focused on getting directions from passersby ("go straight, turn right"), and shopping expressions ("I'd like one...")
As students explored more of the city, they filled in the blank spaces on the map. This chapter also gave them a chance to practice role-playing as their new characters.
What's a tabletop adventure without dungeons! The students discovered a secret passage under a church in Blue City, but the passage was infested with undead. In order to navigate through the dungeon, students had to collect pieces of a map. Each piece was locked behind a challenge. The challenges included such things as:
Vocab checks
Fights
Riddles
Skill checks
Open-ended problems
This section gave students the freedom to navigate the area at their own pace. Each challenge was different so all of the students would have an opportunity to shine.
The grand finale. The dragon cannot be defeated as easily as other enemies. Students needed to collect 4 special artifacts (one per student):
A magic cage to trap the dragon
A bag of infinite water to put out his fire
A dazzling light to blind him
A legendary sword to deliver the killing blow
Through coordination and many dice rolls, the students were finally able to slay the dragon and save the land!
