I created an escape room-style class for my middle school students. I ran this class several times with different groups as part of the English Town that I worked at.
Goal: Find all 9 pieces of the cat painting to win the game. Each piece is locked in a container with a numerical code, and the containers are hidden around the classroom. To open the locks, students must solve the corresponding riddles.
Target Language: The class reviews a variety of topics suitable for middle schoolers, such as months, superlatives, basic verbs, "when", etc.
Riddles + Answers:
(A) It’s February, March, May, and August.
--> Students must remember the month numbers.
(B) Break the wooden tower.
--> The Jenga tower has three blocks with numbers written on them. Students must try different sequences to open the lock.
(C) Read about the animals.
--> There is an animal painting. The painting has a plaque written in English, but there are missing numbers. E.g. "There are 2 horses with ____ legs."
(D) Find the secret pirate treasure.
--> There is a hidden treasure map with arrows pointing in cardinal directions. There is also a compass with a number written for each direction. Using the compass, students must find the combination.
(E) Look behind the biggest square.
--> There is a code written behind the projector screen.
(F) When was the man painted?
--> There is a painting of a man with a plaque for what year it was painted. The year is the code.
(G) Wear a special mask.
--> There is a mask with an alien language written on it, and a chart to the language with corresponding numbers.
(H) Put your hand in the hat if you’re brave.
--> The hat is filled with slime, and in the slime are letter tiles. Spell the word with the letters, then use a chart to find the corresponding numbers for the lock.
(I) Take out the red cone.
--> There is a stack of colored cones with numbers written on them. Once students remove the red cone, the remaining ones make the lock's code.
